## The operative
Born Peggy Guester, a 'torch' who can see the heartfire of every soul and the branching paths of their futures. As a child she used her gift to shield the infant Alvin Maker from the Unmaker, watching his every possible death so she could steer him from each one. She gave up the man she loved to his work for years, schooled herself as 'Miss Larner,' and at last married Alvin — Heartfire. She sees the cost of every choice, and chooses anyway.

Peggy is the purest defense by foresight imaginable: she defends Alvin by living inside his thousand possible deaths and closing them one by one, carrying knowledge that would break anyone else.
