Hari Seldon's psychohistory promised to read the future of the Galaxy off equations — not one person's fate, but the statistical destiny of quadrillions. Asimov built it on the one science that already does this: the kinetic theory of gases. You cannot predict a single molecule, yet temperature and pressure are exact. So here: watch quadrillions of unpredictable individuals sum to a smooth, forecastable curve — the real math under the myth. Then release the Mule, the one man Seldon couldn't see, and watch the Plan break. Asimov wrote his own failure mode; so does this.

the crowd is forecastableeach of N people is a coin no one can call, yet their mean sits within ±2·√(p(1−p)/N) of the trend ~95% of the time (law of large numbers / CLT). raise N and the band narrows as 1/√N — 100× the crowd, 10× the precision. this is real, checkable arithmetic (node-verified).

the Mule · the wallone actor with outsized reach breaks the independence the math needs — the aggregate leaves the band by m·(d−p) and the Plan fails, exactly as it did in the novels. real history has Mules (and has people who, told the forecast, change it). the gas has no molecule that can convert the others.

The honest reading. Psychohistory is not prophecy — it is statistical mechanics with a robe on. The green layer is genuinely true: enough independent, uninformed actors and the aggregate is as forecastable as the pressure of a gas. The amber is Asimov's gift: the pretense that the specific curve of history can be written down. The red is the wall he was honest enough to build himself — the Mule, and the Second Foundation's secrecy (a forecast known is a forecast broken).
