The Story

Galo Thymos, a brash rookie of the mech-firefighting squad, idolizes the governor who saved the city from the Burnish. When the Mad Burnish strike, Galo captures their leader, Lio — and starts to see the people behind the 'monsters.'
Lio's people aren't terrorists but refugees, persecuted for an affliction they didn't choose. As Galo and Lio clash and then ally, the city's savior is revealed as its true villain, exploiting the Burnish to power an escape for the privileged few.
The Burnish flame, it turns out, is a doorway, not a disease. Galo and Lio fuse their opposite energies — burning will and cool resolve — to stop a planetary betrayal, turning the thing the world feared into the thing that saves it.
