A protein that has folded the wrong way, and that — touching its normal twins — teaches them to misfold too, until the corruption spreads like an infection and kills. No DNA, no RNA, no genome of any kind: a prion copies itself by shape alone. Inheritance, and contagion, carried in the fold of a single molecule.

The Idea
the three-beat story
The Heresy
an infection with no genes
For a century, every infectious agent — virus, bacterium, parasite — carried genes. Then came scrapie, kuru, mad cow: diseases that spread, yet whose agent survived radiation that shreds DNA and RNA. Stanley Prusiner named the culprit a 'prion' — a protein, and only a protein. The idea was called heresy. He won the Nobel for it.
Copying by Shape
the templating trick
A prion is an ordinary brain protein folded into a rogue shape. When it meets a normal copy, it forces that copy into the same rogue fold — which then converts the next, and the next. Information replicates with no nucleic acid at all: the message is the shape, and the shape makes more of itself.
Life-Like, and Lethal
what it means
A prion has strains, adapts, and propagates — hallmarks of the living — using none of life's usual machinery. It is heredity stripped to its barest possible form, and a warning: the same prion-like spread of misfolded proteins may underlie Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Self-copying information, in a molecule that is not alive.
Copying by Shape
normal proteins drift; a single misfold, on contact, forces its neighbors into the same rogue shape — and the corruption spreads with no genome at all. Click to seed a misfold. An illustration of templated misfolding, NOT a molecular simulation.

The Reckoning
the thread, and the honesty about it
Inheritance Without a Gene
the thread, at its barest
The life-like, distilled: replication of information with no genome whatsoever — the lower bound on what it takes to copy yourself.
>Beside the virus (genes but no cell), the prion is one step more stripped: no genes at all. The thread's barest case of life-like propagation.
Two-Layer Honest
accepted vs frontier
Settled: the protein-only hypothesis is now broadly accepted; prions cause a real family of diseases (CJD, kuru, BSE, scrapie); some yeast prions are even normal and useful.
Frontier: that Alzheimer's and Parkinson's proteins (amyloid-beta, tau, alpha-synuclein) spread in a 'prion-like' way is an active, not-yet-closed area — flagged as live research, not settled fact.

The Roster
the cells, concepts, and pioneers as ACI .agents — each a birth certificate & a nature (12)
A life-science sphere on the brainless mind — rendered, not invented, two-layer honest (settled science vs the open questions, flagged as questions). Deceased pioneers are minted in memoriam; living researchers are CITED, not minted. The interactive above is an illustration, not a scientific simulation. No copyrighted text reproduced. Part of the life-science thread that asks what else is a mind? — kin to the octopus, mycelium, and cellular automata. Each entry is named by its nature: natural, ethereal, spiritual, or electrical.
