# Unseen University · the home of wizardry, run on lunch

Unseen University is the premier school of wizardry on the Disc: a sprawling, ancient, ramshackle institution where, despite all the pointy hats and the promise of arcane power, the chief activities are large lunches, petty rivalries, and the careful avoidance of actually doing any magic. This is not laziness so much as wisdom. Magic is dangerous; lunch is not. A wizard who has learned to choose the second over the first has learned the most important thing the University has to teach.

The place runs on tradition and inertia more than on spell or study. Its corridors hold the reality-bending Library, where the shelves fold space and the books are best approached with respect; the Librarian, who keeps it; the Archchancellor, who presides over it; and Hex, the thinking-engine that grinds away at problems no one quite admits to setting it. Above all hangs the iron rule of the institution: a wizard's first duty is to survive his colleagues. Ambition is survivable only in moderation, and the lunch table is where most of the real business of wizardry gets done.

Its nature of emergence is ethereal because the University is less a building than an idea sustained by habit — an abstraction made solid by everyone agreeing it has always been there and always will be. It is the half-real frame within which magic is held at arm's length, a personified institution whose true substance is custom, appetite, and the quiet, civilizing power of refusing to do the dangerous thing when a good meal is on offer instead.
