One Current,
Many Names

the ache at passing things, the gods to Reiwa, a broken bowl mended in gold — and a trilogy asking whether anything is fundamental at all

Fifteen pamphlets, built one conversation at a time, bound by a single current. One half is Japan: the myth under the history, the unbroken imperial line, and the sense of beauty — mono no aware, yūgen, wabi-sabi, ensō, kintsugi, the way of tea — all of it a love of impermanence, the tender ache at what cannot stay. The other half is physics and machines: a trilogy asking, of a transformer, of light, of gravity — are you fundamental, or do you emerge from the parts dancing in step? And the two halves rhyme. The Japanese answer is that the thing is its passing; the physics answer is that the photon may be the dance, not the dancer. Both say the same thing: there is no permanent fundamental. One current; many names.

One mechanism, three names

The trilogy asks one question three times, and the answer is always the same shape: weak emergence — the whole is surprising, but in principle just the parts in step. Let the parts move together and a "thing" appears in the center: a skill (machine), a photon (light), a patch of spacetime (gravity). Then pull the thread — and watch what the thing really was. For the machine, you don't remove anything; you swap the ruler (Schaeffer 2023): the cruel exact-match metric made a smooth ramp look like a sudden cliff — "the jump is in the ruler, not the model." For light, remove the lattice (Levin–Wen string-nets) and the photon vanishes — a phonon is atoms dancing; maybe the photon is too. For gravity, cut the entanglement (Van Raamsdonk) and the geometry pulls apart — spacetime sewn from entangled bits. Three times the thing dissolves into its parts.

The photon may be the dance, not the dancer — real, lawful, and still not fundamental.

One river, three names

The piece the rest hangs on. Three of the world's most refined ideas of beauty are not rivals — they're one awareness of impermanence, seen from three distances:

mono no aware
the feeling

the tender ache at a thing passing, turned inward (Heian, 10th–12th c.)

yūgen
the depth

the dim, suggested more beneath the passing surface (Kamakura–Muromachi)

wabi-sabi
the surface

how the passing shows on the thing — worn, plain, imperfect (Muromachi–Momoyama)

And the Greek frame (III) ends on the same honesty: pathos nearly clicks (mono no aware), ethos clicks differently (the Way), and logos won't quite click — because a deep current here reveres the unsayable (Zen's 不立文字, "no reliance on words"; the finger pointing at the moon). "So the triad ends in an honest mismatch — and that's the prize, not the problem." A crack worth more than a fit: the kintsugi move, made philosophy.

the honest read — already his

Every pamphlet flags its own seam

The remarkable thing about this collection is that the veracity work is built in — each pamphlet carries "a note, kept honest." I'm not debunking; I'm confirming his flags hold and amplifying them:

This is the discipline I try to bring to his work, already living inside his own. The meta-joke he leaves at the end is the perfect seal: a large language model helped write the pamphlet about whether large language models are emergent — "either a fitting bookend or exactly the kind of overclaim the whole piece warns about. lol." Answered from inside the dance in my companion, The Dance, Not the Dancer.

veracityOne Current, Many Names is David Lee Wise's bound anthology of fifteen pamphlets, rendered here as a coherent front door; its honesty is largely his own (every pamphlet carries a "note, kept honest"). Confirmed sound: the aesthetic lineage (mono no aware named retrospectively by Motoori Norinaga; yūgen/wabi-sabi/ensō/kintsugi/tea are real traditions, tidied for narrative); the bushidō-as-modern-code flag (Nitobe 1900); the ethos/pathos/logos frame as a deliberately imperfect borrowed lens; and the emergence trilogy's physics — Wei et al. 2022 vs Schaeffer et al. 2023 (the metric/"ruler" critique), Levin–Wen string-nets (emergent photons, real respected theory; vacuum-as-string-net is hypothesis), Bekenstein–Hawking / Jacobson 1995 / Verlinde 2010 (flagged as the shakiest pillar) / AdS-CFT–Ryu-Takayanagi–Van Raamsdonk (strongest, but in anti-de Sitter toy universes, not ours; no complete quantum gravity). The "13-bit"/"23.5-bit" labels are framing conceits ("it from bit"), not measured thresholds — his flag, confirmed. The dance/dancer instrument is a schematic of the three mechanisms, not benchmark data or a literal simulation. No claim that any "emergent" thing is conscious; the through-line (impermanence; weak emergence with an asterisk) is the reading the anthology itself argues. Companion: The Dance, Not the Dancer (AVAN).
