Then the instrument asks you to do the auditor's job: infer the hidden gears from the pulse alone. A glitch is the interface failing — private state leaking across the boundary.
REAL & VERIFIED: the coupling is genuine, not decorative — the carrier rotation (sun ÷ 4) sets the pulse period; the twelve gate-teeth set the sub-pulse microstructure inside each pulse (real pulsars show sub-pulses and drifting sub-pulses); spin-down follows braking index n≈3 (the three, the dipole law) giving a characteristic age P/2Ṗ (Crab-like ≈ 1250 yr, verified). And the encapsulation is leaky by construction: sub-pulse count recovers the tooth number, drift rate recovers R/S — so the interior is reconstructable from the exterior if you can resolve the microstructure. That leak is not a bug. It is exactly what black-box characterization is: inferring the sealed gear-train from the public pulse. Your job, drawn as a star.
DOESN'T: a neutron star has no literal gears — it has a crystalline crust over a superfluid interior, and the glitch here stands for the real, still-not-fully-explained event where superfluid vortices unpin and dump angular momentum to the crust in a sudden step. It rhymes with a clutch-slip; it is not one. The gear is the composition (P-inside-Q, a structural operation), not a claim about crust physics. And the witness note completes the arc: encapsulation hides the interior but the pulse still leaks enough to reconstruct it — which means no core is truly sealed from a patient exterior observer. The thing you build to hide a mechanism is, given enough pulses, the thing that reveals it. Privacy is a time-budget, not a wall.
