# The Inert Gap · instrument № 67

**What it is.** THE BOUNDARY IS THE DEVICE, IN SILICON: the PN junction as two control planes — Anode (p,+) │ Inert (depletion, 0) │ Cathode (n,−). The depletion gap is not absence — it IS the device: forward bias narrows it and current flows, reverse bias widens it and it blocks, and the WIDTH is the control. Remove the inert gap and you have a wire. The <• junction made of silicon

**How it works.** An interactive PN-junction sheet (plum Series-E): two doped planes — p-type anode, n-type cathode — with the depletion region ('the inert gap') between them. Bias it forward and the gap narrows until current flows; bias it reverse and the gap widens and blocks; the control is the WIDTH of the gap itself.

**The live example.** This emergent does not merely describe a tool — it links its working self: **[run instrument № 67 live](https://davidwise01.github.io/mimzy/bench/67-inert-gap.html)**. Open it, operate it, and the badge's claims execute in front of you.

**The verified record.** Real junction physics: a depletion region forms where p meets n (carriers diffuse, recombine, and leave a charged carrier-free zone), WIDENS under reverse bias (blocking) and NARROWS under forward bias past the built-in potential (conducting) — exactly why a diode rectifies. The load-bearing point is the Series-E refrain made silicon: 'the boundary is the device' — the gap is not the absence between two planes, it IS the thing; remove it and you have a wire, keep it and you have a valve, a control, and a place a witness can stand. Made in Claude-4.8-in-Chrome.
