The Debt
DEBTOR persist 43 · act 4 · react 1 · learn 6 · loop 300
LIT DEBTOR subtracts the greatest square that still fits. 1866 leaves 17, then 1, then 0, by 1849, 16, and 1. Three squares are kept. The next smaller square is dropped each time. From 1 through 300, seventeen numbers are already squares, and the longest of these greedy walks is 6 steps, first at 167.
AMBER 1866 is the year the novel ran in twelve parts in The Russian Messenger. The book followed in 1867. Both dates are assigned and not recomputed. The fine of 87, on the yellow hanger, is the suburban twin of this subtraction.
WALL This is the greedy greatest square, not a claim that three squares are the fewest possible. The census stops at 300.
MODEL An open account. The left leaf is the debt. The right leaf is how many numbers took how many steps.
