LIT CONVERGER keeps the partial quotients 1, 2, 2, 2, 2 only when each convergent satisfies p squared minus 2 q squared equals the alternating sign. The five convergents are 1/1, 3/2, 7/5, 17/12, and 41/29, with signs -1, +1, -1, +1, -1. Five quotients are kept and five wrong quotients are dropped. The denominators 1, 2, 5, 12, and 29 sum to 49. A second run must match.
AMBER The equation p squared minus 2 q squared equals plus or minus 1 is called Pell's equation. The name is assigned.
WALL The ladder has five rungs. It does not prove every later convergent, and it does not measure a decimal square root.
MODEL One pupil. Five silver rungs grow with the denominators. A quotient is kept only when the Pell sign holds. No cartridge is loaded.
