Star Scale & Spectroscopy · 10 Colours

How big stars get, from a 12 km neutron star to Stephenson 2-18 at about 2,150 suns wide, a ranked table of the biggest stars, O–M absorption spectra with real lines, Wien's law, and Dave's 10 colours.

Dave (t234u): "i love that, can you make one on what the scale difference and the biggrsts stars we know and the spectogrophay pleasse. thinking this 10 colors or so , white, black, red , blue, green , yellow, orange, purple , brown , void/silver"

MODEL One page, as Dave asked. Its 3D hero is the cooperative agents' form, and the sections below hold the interactive scale walk, the rankings, the spectra and the 10-colour band.

MODEL Cooperative agents: BUILDER (points 1–5) and WEAVER (points 6–10) take turns generating moves toward one shared goal, the target form (faint ghost points). The CRITIC scores the whole form, and both builders receive that same shared reward; neither can win alone. Every page also posts its best shared reward to a cross-page board in localStorage, so agents on all the N·H·O star pages share one team score. Rendered with Three.js r160 from a pinned CDN, devicePixelRatio capped at 2, antialiased. Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom.

LIT on load: the facts on this page are re-checked as arithmetic (it throws on mismatch), the target scores 1, 200 rounds improve, the workspace loop logs 5 entries, and the OBJ and SVG exports are consistent.

1 · Scale walk, from a neutron star to Stephenson 2-18

LIT Real radii in R☉, with AMBER where they're uncertain. Linear mode shows the true size ratios: the camera flies to each object, and you can zoom out to see the last one. Log mode lays them all out together. MODEL Colours are approximate blackbody colours.

2 · The biggest stars we know (radius, R☉)

#StarRadius R☉Uncertainty
1Stephenson 2-182,150AMBER large; luminosity and distance uncertain (Gaia/Paris)
2WOH G641,540AMBER ±? ; 2024 VLTI image shows a dusty cocoon; may now be smaller
3VY Canis Majoris1,420AMBER ±120 (Wittkowski 2012)
4Mu Cephei (Herschel's Garnet Star)972AMBER ±228
5UY Scuti909AMBER revised from 1,708 ± 192 with Gaia distance
6Betelgeuse764AMBER +116 / −62 (Joyce 2020)
7Antares A680AMBER ±? (~680–700)

AMBER Red-supergiant radii depend on the distance, on which wavelength defines the "surface", and on pulsation. The rankings change as new data arrives. Earlier listings put UY Scuti at ~1,708 R☉. For scale, 1,000 R☉ ≈ 4.65 AU, which would reach past Jupiter's orbit.

3 · Spectroscopy

LIT Absorption spectra for classes O–M (380–750 nm). Each continuum is shaded by its Planck curve at the class temperature, and each dark line sits at its real air wavelength: Balmer Hα 656.3, Hβ 486.1, Hγ 434.0, Hδ 410.2; Ca II K 393.4 / H 396.8; Na D 589.0/589.6; Mg b 517.3; the G band at 430.8; TiO bandheads in M stars. MODEL Line depths are illustrative.

Emission vs absorption (hydrogen, Kirchhoff 1859)

Top: hot thin gas glows at its own wavelengths (emission). Bottom: cooler gas in front of a hot continuum takes out the same wavelengths (absorption). The lines match.

4 · Dave's 10 colours

Dave (t234u): "thinking this 10 colors or so , white, black, red , blue, green , yellow, orange, purple , brown , void/silver"

white
white dwarf (Sirius B, ~25,000 K)
black
black hole (Sgr A*, event horizon: no light out)
red
red supergiant (Betelgeuse, ~3,600 K)
blue
O/B star (Rigel, ~12,100 K)
green
no green stars: a 5,800 K blackbody peaks in green but looks white. Green in space: [O III] 500.7 nm nebulae
yellow
the Sun, G2V (yellow-white in space)
orange
K giant (Arcturus, ~4,300 K)
purple
T-dwarf magenta (predicted, AMBER)
brown
brown dwarf (L/T, too small to fuse H)
void/silver
the vacuum, and a neutron star's mirror-hard surface (MODEL)

MODEL The object paired with each colour is my choice. LIT No green stars: any blackbody that peaks in green emits plenty of red and blue as well, so it looks white. AMBER T-dwarf magenta is predicted from models (Na/K absorption), not seen by eye.

Workspace improvement loop: instructions for agents MODEL

  1. Measure: every 40 rounds, record the acceptance rate, the current score and how many rounds since the last improvement.
  2. Try next: if the score has been flat for 40 rounds, widen the mutation step. If acceptance is under 15%, shrink it; over 45%, widen it. Otherwise keep it.
  3. Log back: append {entry, round, measured, tried, step} to the workspace log (it's in the export JSON and the list below), and propose one change to this world on the shared board.
  4. Repeat, forever: never stop improving. Re-check against the real data before you claim anything.
