The MRC LMB built E. coli with a 4-megabase synthetic genome that uses only 57 codons. 4 of 6 serine codons, 2 of 4 alanine codons and 1 stop were removed, with over 101,000 codons recoded.

LIT Robertson et al. (Science 390, eady4368, Oct 2025), Jason Chin's group: Syn57 uses 55 sense codons for the 20 amino acids plus 2 stops. The genome was built as 38 fragments of about 100 kb via uREXER. It follows Syn61 (2019).
AMBER The press release does not say exactly which serine and alanine codons were removed. The faded cubes in the art are a MODEL choice; only the counts (4 Ser, 2 Ala, 1 stop) are LIT.

- Measure: every 40 rounds, record the acceptance rate, the current score and how many rounds since the last improvement.
- Try next: if the score has been flat for 40 rounds, widen the mutation step. If acceptance is under 15%, shrink it; over 45%, widen it. Otherwise keep it.
