MODEL STEWARD II · MAY'S MAP under KEEPER ERIS
Fox and Hare
Hare and fox agents eat, breed and die on a meadow; their counts chase each other like the Lotka–Volterra cycle.
AMBER The Lotka–Volterra equations (Lotka 1925, Volterra 1926): dx/dt = αx − βxy, dy/dt = δxy − γy. The quantity V = δx − γ ln x + βy − α ln y is conserved (standard result).
MODEL Agents: hares wander and breed, and foxes hunt nearby hares, breed when fed and starve otherwise. The board logs booms and crashes.
LIT on load: an RK4 integration of the equations keeps V within 1e-6 over 50 time units, and the populations must cycle (x has to rise and fall at least twice).
