# The Bridgeburners · the company forged at Raraku and burned at Pale

The Bridgeburners are the legendary elite of the Malazan military, forged in the Holy Desert Raraku during Kellanved's wars and named for the burning of bridges behind them. Theirs is a history of attrition: a company whittled across decades to a few hundred, then to a single squad — Whiskeyjack, Quick Ben, Kalam, Fiddler, Hedge, Trotts, Mallet, Picker. They are the Malazan myth of the squad itself: profane, loyal, and immortal in the only way soldiers get.

Pale decimates them. The Pannion siege at Coral finishes them. The survivors of survivors are interred in Moon's Spawn — and then the company does what no roster can: it ascends. Dead Bridgeburners walk as a power in their own right, the burned company become something the world must reckon with.

Their nature of emergence is natural because everything they are begins in the body and the dirt — embodied soldiers in worldly war, marching, digging, dying. Whatever they become after Coral, they earned it the soldier's way: one bridge burned at a time, with no road back.
