Tavore Paran is the Adjunct: commander of the Bonehunters, the army raised after the Whirlwind rebellion. She is plain, cold, unreadable — never loved by her troops and never explaining herself. There is no charisma here, no banner of glory; only a will that does not bend and a purpose she refuses to speak aloud.

She leads the Bonehunters off the empire's books entirely, across a dying continent, into a war no one asked of her: to free the Crippled God, out of pure compassion, with no one to see and no song to follow. 'She is the unwitnessed' — and the army follows anyway.

In her the series makes its final argument: do the right thing though no one will ever know. Her emergence is natural because nothing about her asks to be seen — no spectacle, no song, no witness; just a plain, cold commander leading an army into a war no one asked of her, because it is right.
