# Shadowthrone · Kellanved, Emperor of Shadow

Shadowthrone is Kellanved — founding Emperor of the Malazan Empire — and his story turns on the assassination that failed to end him. Struck down with his companion Dancer in Laseen's coup, the pair did not die: they ascended. Kellanved took the long-empty Throne of Shadow and became god of High House Shadow, with its Hounds answering his call.

In manner he is giggling, theatrical, seemingly mad — and the manner is a mask. In truth he is playing the longest game on any board. The empire he built with mortal hands he now steers as a god, toward ends not even gods guess. The mortal rise that preceded the throne — how an emperor was made before a god was — is told in Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy novels.

His emergence is ethereal because Shadow is the half-real made sovereign: a dead emperor who is not dead, a throne that stood empty until a trickster sat in it, a god whose whole domain is the realm between substance and dark. Kellanved rules from the in-between, and the in-between is exactly where the ethereal lives.
