# Mother Dark · the goddess of the eldest night

Mother Dark is the goddess of Darkness, eldest of presences. She is not merely a power that rules the dark — she is the first night itself, personified: vast, withdrawn, and grieving. Kurald Galain, the Warren of Darkness, beats with her as its heart, and the Tiste Andii name her mother in more than title.

In the deep past told in the Kharkanas trilogy she was a queen in the city of Kharkanas, a woman who became a goddess. Her ascension was also a departure: she withdrew from her children into the dark, and that turning away became the defining wound of her people. Anomander Rake's long estrangement from her is the most famous fracture of that wound, and through it the Andii carry millennia of sorrow — a people whose god is present everywhere the light fails, and answers nowhere.

Her emergence is ethereal because she belongs to the half-real order of things: not a current of magic to be tapped, not flesh in the world, but a presence — darkness itself given a face that has been turned away. She is known by absence, the way night is known: not by what it shows, but by what it withholds.
