# Mappo Runt · the Trell who guards his friend from himself

Mappo Runt is a Trell warrior given a single duty by the Nameless Ones: walk beside Icarium. Befriend him. Love him. And stop him — or steer him away — whenever the rage threatens to rise. The vow admits no end and no relief; it is a vigil measured in centuries.

For all those centuries he has been the Lifestealer's companion and his jailer at once, and the cruelty of the post is that the two roles cannot be separated. He lies to his dearest friend daily, and the lies are mercy — for Icarium must never know what he has done. Mappo carries that knowledge alone: the weight of every city Icarium ever destroyed rides on the Trell's broad shoulders, paid for in silence and tenderness.

This is the series' tenderest tragedy of friendship. Mappo's devotion is real and his prison is real, and they are the same thing — the guardian whose love IS the cage.
