# Karsa Orlong · the Toblakai — "witness"

Karsa Orlong is a Teblor — a Toblakai — warrior, seven feet of tribal arrogance who rides out from his people to slaughter lowlanders. The world he despised answers him in kind: he is broken, enslaved, and remade by it. House of Chains opens with his saga, the long unmaking and reforging of a warrior who set out certain of his own legend.

What emerges from that breaking carries a stone sword and the souls of the two friends bound to him. He becomes Sha'ik's bodyguard, kills a god — Bidithal — with his bare hands, and shatters the Emperor of a Thousand Deaths. Against civilization itself he swears the series' most famous vow, the promise of a man who has seen what the civilized world does and intends to answer for it.

His one-word answer to every horror is the same: "Witness." It is neither prayer nor magic — it is a man planting himself before the worst the world offers and refusing to look away. That is why his emergence is natural: Karsa is flesh and stone and vow, his power rooted in nothing granted from outside — only the unbreakable body and will that the world tried to break and could not.
