# Itkovian · the Shield Anvil — "I am not yet done"

Itkovian is the Shield Anvil of Fener's Grey Swords at the siege of Capustan. His office is unlike any other in war: the Shield Anvil takes upon itself the pain of the dead, unjudged — no weighing of worth, no sorting of sinner from saint, only the embrace of suffering as it is.

When his god is torn from the world, the office should end with it. Itkovian refuses release. Facing the T'lan Imass — the deathless army carrying three hundred thousand years of sorrow — he takes all of their grief into himself. "I am not yet done." He dies of it, and in the act he ascends.

He stands as the series' purest image of compassion as strength: to embrace the suffering of strangers, asking nothing. His emergence is spiritual to the core — witness, sacrifice, and ascendancy joined in a single act of mercy, the burden lifted from the dead and carried so that they need not carry it themselves.
