Anomander Rake is the Son of Darkness — Lord of the Tiste Andii, master of the floating fortress Moon's Spawn, a Soletaken dragon, and bearer of Dragnipur, the sword that chains the souls it kills to drag darkness forever. Black-skinned and silver-haired, he is grief, leadership, and mercy gathered into a single figure, hundreds of thousands of years old.

His burden is his people. The Tiste Andii are a race weighed down by despair, and Rake carries that despair himself, answering it the only way he knows: by choosing causes worth fighting for, and giving his people purpose through the choosing. His leadership is not command so much as a sustained act of mercy stretched across millennia.

In Toll the Hounds he orchestrates his own death at Dassem Ultor's blade — a death designed to break Dragnipur and redeem Mother Dark's estrangement from her children. It stands as the series' most shattering sacrifice: the lord who bore the sword of chained darkness undoing it with his own ending.
