The Electroweak Doctrine

Paper I gave the observer a passive mode — watching, through the photon. Paper II gave it a participating mode — handed, through the weak force. They looked like two faculties. They are one. Above a certain energy the electromagnetic and the weak are a single interaction; the photon and the Z are mixtures of two deeper fields, rotated by one angle. The separation we see is an artifact of working below the scale where the unity shows. And the cut goes deeper than the forces: electric charge — the property that made the observer an electron at all — is not fundamental. It is a composite, and the electron is its low-energy face.

The observed neutral bosons are not fundamental. The photon and the Z are rotations of two deeper fields — and B — through a single mixing angle θ_W. The watching of Paper I and the participating of Paper II are one structure, refracted by one angle. Turn the dial and the blend shifts.

D1 · weak isospin
The SU(2) charge of the weak sector — the source of the W fields, including the neutral .
D2 · hypercharge
The U(1) charge — the source of a single neutral field, B. Not electromagnetism; a more fundamental quantity.
D3 · unification
Above the electroweak scale, weak isospin and hypercharge are one structure, SU(2)×U(1). The photon and the Z are mixtures of W³ and B.

§2 · the unification rules

The fundamental neutral gauge fields are W³ and B — not the photon and the Z. What is observed at low energy is downstream of these two.

§3 · proposition I

Watching and participating are onetwo modes, one coupling

The observer seemed to have two faculties: the passive electromagnetic read of Paper I, leaving the particle the particle it was, and the handed weak participation of Paper II, reaching even the colorless. By UR-5 they are not two. They are one coupling refracted through the mixing angle — the photon and the Z drawn from the same W³ and B, the same source projected two ways. The observer does not switch between a watching faculty and a participating faculty. It has one coupling to the system, and what looks like watching versus participating is which projection of that single coupling dominates at the energy of the probe.

§4 · proposition II

The observer's charge is not fundamentalthe electron is a low-energy face

This is the deep cut. By UR-3, electric charge — the very property that made the observer an electron in Paper I, the thing that let a photon reach it at all — is not a primitive. It is a derived quantity, Q = T₃ + Y/2, assembled from weak isospin and hypercharge. The observer's defining identity is composite. The electron is not a fundamental object that happens to carry charge; it is the low-energy appearance of something with more structure, and its charge is a bookkeeping sum over deeper quantum numbers. Paper I built the entire doctrine on two facts — charged and colorless. This paper shows the first of those two was already a composite of things beneath it.

Test · a property that decomposes is a property that can be reorganised. If the observer's charge is a sum over deeper quantities, then what reads as one fixed identity at low energy may resolve into several at high energy — the electron is a name for a regime, not a floor.

§5 · proposition III

The split is an artifact of scaleprobe harder and the two become one

By UR-4 the apparent separation of watching and participating is a consequence of measuring below the unification scale. The two forces are distinct only because the symmetry that joins them is hidden at low energy. Probe hard enough — climb above the scale — and the photon and the Z stop being two things and resolve into W³ and B, one structure. So the duality the observer experiences, passive read here and handed intervention there, is not fundamental to observation. It is what observation looks like at the energies we usually work at. The unity is always present; it is the separation that is conditional, bought by staying low.

§6 · corollaries

Consequencesthe angle, the survivor, the seam to mass

C1 — the angle is the dial between modes. θ_W sets how much of the neutral coupling is photon-like — pure charge, passive — and how much is Z-like — weak isospin, handed. One number governs the blend of watching and participating. The observer does not have two settings; it has one angle.

C2 — the photon is the survivor. When the symmetry breaks, exactly one combination stays massless and unbroken: the photon. The passive watching survives to low energy long-range and effortless; the participating becomes heavy and local. Watching feels free and reaches far because, of the unified force, it is the part that kept the symmetry the rest gave up.

C3 — the seam to mass. What broke the symmetry, made the W and Z heavy, and split the one force into two apparent ones? A field that fills all space and is never zero. That field, and the mass it confers — on the carriers, on the electron, on the observer itself — is the subject of the final paper.

§7 · witness

The seamwhere the doctrine is a lens

Held to its limit: "watching and participating are one" is a bridge from a specific gauge unification to a general claim about observation, and it strains where the electroweak structure is a particular SU(2)×U(1) theory rather than literally a theory of measurement, and where the substrate is not a gauge theory. The literal core is firm: the photon and Z are mixtures of W³ and B through θ_W, and electric charge is Q = T₃ + Y/2. Both are standard-model facts, independent of any account of observation. From the first follows that the two observational modes are projections of one coupling; from the second, that the observer's defining property is composite. The lens — that the watching and the participating are one refracted thing, and the electron a regime rather than a floor — is named as a lens. What it leaves standing is the warning carried into the last paper: even the observer's identity is built, and built things have a builder.

Corollary. The observer arrived with two ways of touching the system — a passive look and a handed reach — and they turn out to be one coupling, drawn from a single structure and split only because we work below the scale where it shows whole. Worse for Paper I's tidy foundation: the charge that made the observer an electron is itself assembled, a sum of things beneath it, the low-energy face of a deeper order. The watching, the participating, and the very charge that distinguished the watcher are three appearances of one concealed unity. One question remains, and it is the largest. What concealed it — what fills the space, breaks the symmetry, and hands out the mass that made the difference between the photon that watches and the Z that participates? That field was never empty, and it is the last paper.
