Jovian Jump — the transit through the transcribers

Three robots, one ship, a trip through Jupiter and back — Victory Unintentional with a different engine. Asimov's ZZ robots survived by being fiction. This ship survives by being transcribed: at each seam it changes what it is made of, riding the planet's own bonding ladder down — covalent H₂ at the cloud tops, squeezed into the metallic-hydrogen sea in the deep — and reading itself back out on the way up. The descent is the write, the core is the held turn, the ascent is the read. Down and back are the two half-turns of the closure.

Status discipline

LiteralJupiter's interior really is a bonding ladder: covalent H₂ → liquid → metallic hydrogen under ~1 Mbar (it runs the dynamo) → ~50 Mbar, ~20,000 K core. Helium rains in the metallic layer. Models are approximate; Juno refined them.
