The Idea
the three-beat story
Every immune system answers one question, constantly: is this me, or not me? It must attack invaders and spare the body's own ~37 trillion cells. Err one way and infection wins; err the other and it attacks the self. The whole architecture is a solution to that discrimination.
The innate system is the fast, ancient first response — patrolling cells that recognize the general shapes of pathogens within minutes. The adaptive system is slower and astonishing: it generates a near-infinite library of receptors, finds the few that fit a brand-new enemy, and multiplies them into an army.
After a threat is cleared, the body keeps memory cells — a standing record of the enemy. Meet it again years later and the response is faster and overwhelming. This is immunity, and it is why a vaccine works: a memory installed without the disease.

How It Learns

- Adaptive immunity is Darwinian: receptor genes are randomly shuffled (V(D)J recombination), and the cells whose receptors happen to fit the enemy are selected and amplified — evolution, running inside you, in days.
- Clonal selection (Burnet) and tolerance (Medawar) are settled; the old immune-network idea (Jerne) is historically important but now largely superseded — flagged as such.
