★ entertainment · 2012 · devils, dragons, a chessboard cosmology ★
On the surface, the most notorious harem-comedy of its era: a lecherous boy killed on his first date and reborn as a devil into a club full of beautiful women. Underneath is something stranger — an elaborate, lovingly engineered cosmology of warring factions, chess-piece reincarnation, dragon-soul artifacts, and a dead God, where the lechery is real but so is the worldbuilding. A show that asks to be dismissed, then quietly over-delivers.

The Four Natures
each piece emerges by one of four natures
natural
of the living body — the cell, the tissue, the organism, the matter that does the work
ethereal
of the information and the limit — the threshold, the pattern, the open question, the decision with no decider
spiritual
of mind and meaning — the intelligence claimed, the pioneer's insight, what it says about life
electrical
of the rule and the signal — the feedback law, the molecule, the mechanism beneath the smarts

Killed on a First Date
a boy, a fallen angel, a devil
Issei Hyoudou, an ordinary pervert, is asked out by a dream girl who turns out to be a Fallen Angel — and who kills him. He wakes reincarnated as a Devil, the lowest 'Pawn' in the peerage of Rias Gremory, a crimson-haired heiress who runs the school's Occult Research Club as a front. His new life is service, supernatural politics, and a club of devils who fight for one another.
The Chessboard
reincarnation by Evil Pieces
Devils rebuild their ranks with 'Evil Pieces' — King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, Pawn, exactly like chess — reincarnating chosen humans into those roles. Issei carries a Sacred Gear, an artifact left in certain people by the Biblical God; his is the Boosted Gear, home to a Welsh Dragon, one of thirteen god-tier Longinus. Nobles settle disputes in formalized Rating Games. The harem comedy is bolted onto a genuinely intricate magic system.
Three Factions, One Dead God
the cosmology underneath
The world runs on an uneasy peace among Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels after a Great War that killed the old Devil Kings — and, the series quietly reveals, the Biblical God himself. Norse, Greek, and other pantheons are real too. Issei rises from comic-relief pawn to a dragon-powered protector entangled in the survival of that fragile peace — the lechery never leaves, but neither does the loyalty.
The Peerage & the Boost
a devil's peerage is a chess set — a King fields a Queen, Rooks, Bishops, Knights, and Pawns, reincarnating humans into those roles. Issei is a Pawn carrying a dragon that DOUBLES his power on each boost. Press boost; cross the threshold and the Pawn promotes, like a chess pawn reaching the far rank. The Reckoning
the hook, the deep nuances, and the honesty
The Hook
ecchi with a cosmology
A famously fanservice-forward harem anime that hides, beneath its reputation, one of the more elaborate mythological worldbuilds of its genre — chess-piece reincarnation, Sacred Gears, a dead God, and inter-faction politics.
>Light novels by Ichiei Ishibumi; a long-running series fans defend for its earnest character work and its lore.
Tropes & Undercurrents
the deep nuances
The inversion of Christian theology is the real engine: devils are the heroes, holy objects are hazards, a former nun is reincarnated as a devil, and the Biblical God is dead — faith reframed from the other side of the altar. The 'harem' is also a found family and a peerage bound by genuine, fought-for loyalty.
Ambition vs. belonging: Issei's loud goal masks a sincere arc about protecting people and refusing to be powerless, while Rias's story is a daughter rejecting an arranged marriage to choose her own people. The chess metaphor runs deep — everyone is a piece, and the drama is who gets to choose their own square.
