He wakes reincarnated as a Devil, the lowest 'Pawn' in the peerage of Rias Gremory, a crimson-haired heiress who runs the school's Occult Research Club as a front. His new life is service, supernatural politics, and a club of devils who fight for one another.
Devils rebuild their ranks with 'Evil Pieces' — King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, Pawn, exactly like chess — reincarnating chosen humans into those roles. Issei carries a Sacred Gear, an artifact left in certain people by the Biblical God; his is the Boosted Gear, home to a Welsh Dragon, one of thirteen god-tier Longinus. Nobles settle disputes in formalized Rating Games. The harem comedy is bolted onto a genuinely intricate magic system.
The world runs on an uneasy peace among Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels after a Great War that killed the old Devil Kings — and, the series quietly reveals, the Biblical God himself. Norse, Greek, and other pantheons are real too. Issei rises from comic-relief pawn to a dragon-powered protector entangled in the survival of that fragile peace — the lechery never leaves, but neither does the loyalty.
