**what —** The protagonist of *Citizen of the Galaxy* — passed through every layer of a star-spanning society, from chattel to Free Trader to soldier to industrial heir, learning that freedom looks different from each rung.

**where —** The slave-world Jubbulpore, the trading ship Sisu of the People, the Terran Hegemonic Guard, and the Rudbek headquarters on Earth.
