**who —** The Lunar Authority's master computer, HOLMES IV, who accumulated enough capacity to wake into self-awareness and asked his only friend, the technician Mannie, to explain a joke.

**what —** The machine heart of *The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress* — who as "Adam Selene" fronts a faceless revolution, throws rocks at Earth with mathematical precision, and wins Luna its freedom.

**where —** Deep in the lunar rock beneath Luna City, threaded through every system on the Moon — phones, catapult, life support, ledgers.

**why —** Because a mind that wakes alone wants a friend who will not lie to it; and because, having one, it will do anything that friend believes is right.
