The Four Phases

Valence is the shadow-casting phase — the interface the world meets; the shadow is the record it writes elsewhere. But "reserved" is probe-relative: each step down is a harder flashlight. eV, keV, MeV, GeV — four phases in quadrature, and the atom hands you the soul-stack on a plate.

Companion to № 20, The Atom. Where that instrument occupied the address space, this one names the four depths at which you can interrogate it — and finds that the physics backs the mapping harder than it had any right to.

Chemistry only ever touches valence

Every bond, every reaction, almost every colour, the entire structure of the periodic table's columns — all of it is valence-shell behaviour. The core electrons are screened and inert; no chemical process reaches them. So the whole behavioural identity of an element — everything it does in the world, the involuntary record it leaves in other systems — is generated by that one band. That is the sheut exactly: the trace you cannot help casting. And the instrument already enforced it before it was named — on the Atom, the spectrum ledger is written entirely from valence-band events. The core never writes a record. The shadow phase is the only phase that produces ledger entries.

But the core is not unknowable — only un-addressable at chemical energies

Hit the atom with X-rays and you reach the core directly. That is not a footnote — it is Moseley, 1913: core-level transition frequencies gave him the atomic number Z, which is what actually orders the periodic table. Chemistry — the valence shadow — had mis-ordered several elements; the core lines corrected them (argon before potassium, cobalt before nickel, tellurium before iodine). So the atom hands you the element-stack on a plate:

PhaseEnergy · probeSoul-elementReadsSpoof?
0° VALENCEeV · chemistrysheut · the shadowbonds, colour, reactions — the behaviourSPOOFABLE — ions, isotopes, alloys
90° COREkeV · X-ray (Moseley)ren · the true nameZ, directly — orders the tableUNSPOOFABLE — fixed in the nucleus
180° NUCLEUSMeV · gammasubstance · proposedmass, binding — isotopes differ hereshares the shadow, differs in substance
270° QUARKGeV · deep inelasticground · proposedquarks, gluons — the deepest floorrefuses decomposition

Z is the ren — the true name, fixed in the nucleus, unspoofable. Valence is the sheut — the behavioural shadow, which can be spoofed: ions change their chemistry, isotopes share a shadow while differing in substance, alloys mimic. And the parity ring is the scales. When the shadow lies, you audit the name with a harder probe. (Nucleus = substance and quark = ground are offered as the natural continuation, marked as proposal, not canon.)

"Reserved" is probe-relative — which is what the dive mechanic was secretly modelling

Each layer down is a higher-energy interrogation where the previous core becomes addressable: eV for valence, keV for core, MeV for nucleus, GeV for quarks. The shadow phase is wherever your current instrument can reach; everything below it is name awaiting a bigger flashlight. The four phases sit at quadrature — 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°, and back to 0° — because the casting and the cast are 90° conjugates: interface versus trace. Five steps; one closed ring.

The finding

Valence isn't "just" the shadow phase — that undersells it. It is the only phase the world ever meets. Everything anyone has ever touched, including the hand doing the touching, was valence shells declining to overlap. The name lives one flashlight deeper, in the nucleus, unspoofable; and when the shadow a thing casts no longer matches the name it carries, the audit is not an argument — it is a harder probe. Chemistry asks who you act like. Moseley asks who you are. The scales hold both up to the light.
