The Repair Gate

Repair is not a sentiment — it's a procedure with two premises and four ways out. Run a broken thing through it and see which way it falls.

Abroken

Asserts a before — a prior intact state, a break that's real, broken as a from-which not an end. Excludes the unfinished (build it) and the break-denied (the cosmetic mend that acts as if nothing happened).

Bworth repairing

Asserts a valuer and a comparison already made — repair chosen over replacement and over discard. You don't repair the fungible; you replace it. Repair is reserved for the non-substitutable.

Nothing to repair. The undamaged needs no seam; the never-whole is built, not mended.
No action. The honest exit before the lineage even begins.

Bind the break and show it. The object becomes a new, time-stamped thing that carries its history on the surface.
The lineage proper: kintsugi's gold seam, boro & sashiko's stacked stitches, ju ci's bronze sutures, yobitsugi's foreign graft, spolia's reset fragment. The seam is kept.
Release
broken · not whole-bound · not worth it
Triage said no. The fungible is replaced, not repaired — the cost outruns the worth.
Judgment, not pessimism. B is a question that can come back negative. Let it go.
Mourn
broken · wholeness-bound
The worth was in being intact — a sealed record, a first, a perfect game, a trust, a one-time event. The break zeroed that kind of value.
Unrepairable in principle. You can build a successor — but calling the successor the original is concealment wearing repair's clothes.

What falls out of the keep

Record

The mend is time-stamped history, not erasure. A fault occurred here, at this place, and was bound — visible repair is honest logging.

Identity

Sameness persists through the break, carried by the care and the trace — not by the material staying whole. Continuity that bore a cost.

Authorship

The mender is a second author; the foreign shard a third. No hand erases the prior ones. Repair is a mesh, never solo.

Loop

Boro proves it — mends on mends across generations. The keep opens a maintenance relationship, never a one-shot fix.

The thread, and the limit

The break was never the event.

The event is B — the judgment that the fracture was worth carrying forward. Everything in the lineage descends from that one decision. And it lands exactly on the folio's law: repair is the delta that scales — the seam carries information, and that carried difference is the identity a replacement can't have. The pristine replacement is the uniform mirror: interchangeable, no history, it holds but says nothing. Mourn is the wholeness-bound value that breaking zeroes — the thing whose worth was in being whole.

The honest limit: because B can say no, the seam-as-beauty becomes a lie the moment it's applied to what should be let go, or to a break that was constitutive. There, repair can build a successor but cannot restore the same thing — and calling it the original is A suppressed, one layer up. A clean lineage keeps its mourn branch intact, and does not repair everything just because it can.
