# The Descolada · the virus that writes life

The Descolada is a self-modifying, semi-intelligent virus native to the world of Lusitania. Long ago it rewrote every native species, leaving each one dependent on it for survival and binding paired plant and animal species — like the pequeninos and the trees they become — into a single shared life cycle. It is the substrate beneath all of Lusitania's life, the author that wrote the living world into its present form.

To off-world humans the Descolada is simply lethal, and it constantly adapts to every countermeasure raised against it, defeating each attempt to contain or destroy it. Its relentless, almost purposeful resistance hints that it may not be a natural accident at all, but an engineered tool left behind by some vanished species.

This makes the Descolada the central biological and moral puzzle of Xenocide: is it varelse — an alien force to be destroyed without question — or is it a form of life with its own right to exist? To eradicate it is to save human lives but doom every native species bound to it; to spare it is to risk everything human.

Its nature of emergence is natural because the Descolada belongs to the embodied, worldly order — alien biology, dependent species, and the brutal arithmetic of survival and power on a single planet — rather than to the realms of mind, philotic connection, or soul.
