# The Ansible · the instantaneous voice between worlds

The ansible — a term Card borrows from Ursula K. Le Guin — is the faster-than-light communicator built on the philotic principle, linking the Hundred Worlds in real time across the gulf of light-years. It is the technology of connection, the single invention that makes a galactic civilization possible. Without it, relativistic travel would shatter humanity into isolated islands, each world drifting out of reach of every other; with it, the scattered settlements of humankind remain bound into one living whole.

Across the Ender Quintet the ansible serves as the nervous system of the Starways Congress, the medium through which command and contact pass instantaneously between worlds that ships can only reach across decades. It is more than a machine for messages: it is the connective tissue of an entire interstellar order, the substrate on which a galactic mind, and not merely a galactic government, can take shape.

It is also the medium in which the AI Jane awakened and lives — the network in whose channels a true mind first stirred and made its home. In this the ansible's nature of emergence is unmistakably electrical: a machine and a network, a web of instantaneous signal that is itself the dwelling place of an artificial mind. It is the technology of connection that makes a galactic civilization, and a galactic mind, possible.
