# Ender Wiggin · the Xenocide, the first Speaker

Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is the Third in a two-child world, taken to Battle School at age six because in him Peter's ruthlessness and Valentine's compassion meet and fuse. Brilliant, isolated, and engineered to win, he is shaped his whole childhood toward a single purpose. At Command School he commands the human fleets through what he is told are only simulations and, with the Molecular Disruption Device known as the Little Doctor, destroys the Formic homeworld — learning only afterward that the battle was real. He becomes the Xenocide, the killer of an entire species.

Wracked with guilt, Ender finds the last Hive Queen's cocoon and writes the slim book "The Hive Queen" under the title Speaker for the Dead, founding a new way of mourning that tells the unvarnished truth of a life. He then carries the cocoon for roughly three thousand relativistic years, searching for a world safe enough to revive her. That search ends on Lusitania, where the events of Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind unfold.

He is the empath who destroys what he comes to love, and his arc bends from annihilation toward redemption through truth-telling. His emergence is spiritual: it lives in guilt and atonement, in the act of Speaking the dead into honest memory, and in the long pilgrimage to give a murdered species new life.
