# The Tarnished · the graceless exile called back to the Ring

The Tarnished is the player's role in Elden Ring: a descendant of Godfrey's exiled warriors, long ago stripped of the Erdtree's grace and cast out of the Lands Between. After the Shattering broke the Order, the call came again — grace now guides the graceless back to the Ring, drawing the exiles home to a land their ancestors were driven from.

Undying as long as grace holds, the Tarnished climbs from nobody to slayer of demigods. The arc runs from the very bottom of the world to its crown: the Tarnished may end as Elden Lord of any of several possible ages — or as the Lord of Frenzied Flame.

What defines the Tarnished is exile itself. This is a hero who stands outside the Order it must repair or replace — graceless by history, guided by grace anyway, and free for that reason to choose what the next age becomes.

Its emergence is natural: the Tarnished is no god and no half-real power but an embodied warrior — flesh, blood, and stubborn will walking the land itself, earning everything by hand.
