# The Mentats · the human computers

In the universe of Dune, the thinking machines were outlawed after the Butlerian Jihad, whose commandment rang down the centuries: "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." Into the silence left by that prohibition stepped the Mentats — human beings trained to perform the logic and computation once surrendered to machines.
