# Duke Leto Atreides · the Red Duke

Duke Leto Atreides I, the Red Duke, is the beloved and honorable head of House Atreides. Lured to Arrakis by the Emperor and the Harkonnens, he steps knowingly into a trap built to destroy him and his House. He governs not through terror but through loyalty, prizing above all the people who serve him — a ruler measured by the men who would die for him rather than the fear he could command.

The trap closes through betrayal from within: his own trusted doctor, Wellington Yueh, delivers him to the enemy. Yet even undone, Leto refuses to fall without striking back, carrying a poison-gas tooth meant to take the Baron with him into death. He dies betrayed, but unbroken in intent — his last act an attempt to drag his destroyer down beside him.

His emergence is natural — the embodied register of the saga: the Houses and their soldiers, the loyalty of flesh-and-blood men, the desert that swallows them. Leto belongs to this earthly weave of power and allegiance rather than to prescience or prophecy. After his death, his ideal of honor haunts and shapes Paul for the rest of the saga, an inheritance no betrayal could take from the line.
