What It Is
A dark-forest weapon: a small slip of material that initiates a runaway collapse of three-dimensional space into two dimensions. An unknown civilization flicks one into the Solar System, flattening the Sun and planets into a beautiful, lethal plane — the casual execution of a star system as a work of art.
Across The Three Media
The dual-vector foil and the two-dimensionalization of the Solar System are the climax of Death's End — book three only. Neither live-action series has reached it yet, which makes it the purest 'on the page' marvel of the universe.
The Real Science [FLUFF]
FLUFF — and gorgeous. There is no known mechanism to lower a region of space out of a dimension. It rhymes loosely with real speculative ideas (extra spatial dimensions in string theory; false-vacuum decay as a cosmic phase change), but as written it is pure science fiction. Distinct from the photoid — that one is a kinetic star-killer; this one is a change to the rules of space itself.
