The Story

Basildon, 1980
the bright machines

Formed in Essex out of the post-punk synth wave; Vince Clarke's hooks drove the debut Speak & Spell (1981). When Clarke left, Martin Gore took over the songwriting — and steered the band toward the dark.

The Masses & Violator
the peak

Music for the Masses (1987) filled stadiums (the 101 concert film). Violator (1990) was the summit — a darkwave landmark — followed by the gospel-tinged Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993).

The Devotion
the long faith

Decades of one of music's most devoted global fanbases; a founding influence on darkwave, EBM, and industrial. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 2020. Andy Fletcher died in 2022; Memento Mori followed in 2023.
