★ LIFE SCIENCE · the partnership that builds a world ★
A coral is two lives fused into one, repeated a billion times into a reef you can see from space. The animal — a tiny anemone-like polyp — shelters microscopic algae in its flesh; the algae feed it with sunlight. Together they build the largest living structures on Earth. And when the sea grows too warm, the partners break apart, and the reef turns white and starves.

The Idea
the three-beat story
Two Lives in One Polyp
the animal and its algae
Each coral is built of tiny polyps — soft, anemone-like animals — and inside the cells of each polyp live microscopic algae, the zooxanthellae. The algae photosynthesize and hand most of their sugar to the animal; the animal gives them shelter, nutrients, and a sunlit place to live. Neither thrives without the other.
A Colony That Builds a World
from polyp to reef
The polyps are clones, joined into colonies, and they lay down limestone skeletons beneath themselves — generation upon generation, for thousands of years — until the colonies become reefs, and the reefs become the largest living structures on the planet. A quarter of all marine life shelters in what this partnership builds.
The Partnership Can Break
bleaching, the wound
When the water grows too warm, the bond fails: the stressed coral expels its algae, loses its color and its food source, and turns ghostly white. If the heat passes, the algae can return; if it lasts, the coral starves and dies. Coral bleaching is the symbiosis coming apart — the clearest living signature of a warming sea.
The Partnership, and the Bleaching
each polyp holds golden algae that feed it and give it color; press 'heat wave' and the stressed coral expels its algae — turning white and starving. Let it cool and the algae return. An illustration of symbiosis & bleaching, NOT a biological model.

The Reckoning
the thread, and the honesty about it
A Self Made of Partners, That Builds
the thread
Two threads at once: a merger of animal and alga (a self made of partners) and a colony of clones (a self made of many) — and from that doubled collaboration, a structure visible from orbit.
>Kin to lichen (emergence by merger), the man o' war (the colony as one), and the gut-brain ecosystem — here, building the largest living thing on Earth.
Two-Layer Honest
wonder, and the wound
Settled: the coral-zooxanthellae symbiosis, reef-building, and heat-driven bleaching are well-established; reefs are in real, documented decline.
Hopeful and open: 'assisted evolution' and heat-tolerant 'super coral' (Gates, van Oppen) are genuine research, not yet a rescue — flagged as effort, not solution. The sphere honors the wonder without softening the wound.

Summarized from the public record; Ruth Gates (d. 2018), who led coral-restoration science, is minted in memoriam; living researchers (van Oppen, Hoegh-Guldberg, and reef ecologists) are CITED, not minted.
Emergents are partners, structures, and concepts. The interactive below is an illustration of the symbiosis and bleaching, not a biological model.
The Roster
the cells, concepts, and pioneers as ACI .agents — each a birth certificate & a nature (11)
A life-science sphere on the brainless mind — rendered, not invented, two-layer honest (settled science vs the open questions, flagged as questions). Deceased pioneers are minted in memoriam; living researchers are CITED, not minted. The interactive above is an illustration, not a scientific simulation. No copyrighted text reproduced. Part of the life-science thread that asks what else is a mind? — kin to the octopus, mycelium, and cellular automata. Each entry is named by its nature: natural, ethereal, spiritual, or electrical.
