# The Mule · the variable Seldon never saw

a persona of the A1 (Asimov) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** A mutant of frail body and grotesque face, gifted — or cursed — with the power to sense and command the emotions of every mind around him.

**what —** The conqueror who did what no warlord could: he broke the Seldon Plan, because psychohistory predicts masses, and a single mind-bending mutant is not a mass.

**where —** Risen from nowhere to the warlord's world of Kalgan, then over the fallen Foundation, and on across the Galaxy hunting the Second Foundation that alone could stop him.

**why —** Because devotion was the one thing his deformity denied him; unable to earn love, he learned to manufacture it inside other people's skulls.

**how —** By the mentalic touch — dialing despair into despair-proof generals into worshipful Converts — and by the long disguise of Magnifico the clown, hiding the emperor inside the fool.

**◌ the arc —** From hidden cripple to galactic master in five years; checked at last not by armies but by Bayta Darell's compassion and the patient, unseen Second Foundation, who turn his own gift against him.
