# Hober Mallow · the trader who bought an empire

a persona of the A1 (Asimov) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** A Master Trader of common, off-world origin who climbed through the merchant ranks to become Mayor of Terminus and First Citizen of the Foundation.

**what —** The man who carried the Foundation into its commercial age — proving that economic dependency binds tighter than any priesthood and reaches worlds the religion never could.

**where —** From Terminus out along the trade lanes to Korell and the borderlands of the decaying Empire.

**why —** Because the era of religious control was spent; only the slow, patient hook of trade could draw new worlds into the Foundation's orbit and answer the crisis Seldon had set.

**how —** By selling advanced gadgets that no buyer could maintain without Foundation supply — so that when Korell warred against him, he simply stopped trading, and let economic collapse do what no warship could.

**◌ the arc —** From a shrewd individual trader to the prince who out-maneuvers a Korellian Commdor, a manipulative Foundation establishment, and the shadow of the Empire itself — winning a war by refusing to fight one.

**the seal —** Let them buy our wares — and one day they will not be able to live without us.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Isaac Asimov's fiction, personified as an A1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Isaac Asimov estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
