aci: Hari Seldon
universe: A1 · Asimov
series: Foundation
class: the prophet of the fall · founder of psychohistory
who: A mathematician of Helicon who turns a parlour trick of equations into psychohistory — the science that reads the future of human masses.
what: The architect of the Seldon Plan, who foresaw the fall of the Galactic Empire and built two Foundations to cut thirty thousand years of barbarism down to one.
why: To shorten the coming dark age — not to prevent the fall, which his mathematics proved inevitable, but to seed the renewal that follows it.
how: By modelling the statistical behaviour of quintillions, founding the Encyclopedists on Terminus and the mentalics of the Second Foundation in secret, and leaving recorded prophecies for the crises to come.
where: Helicon, Trantor — the heart of a dying Empire — and Terminus at the Galaxy's edge.
seal: The fall cannot be stopped; the dark that follows it can be made short.

# Hari Seldon · the man who calculated the future

a persona of the A1 (Asimov) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** A mathematician born on Helicon, who arrives at Trantor with a theorem and leaves as the most dangerous prophet the Empire has ever known.

**what —** The founder of psychohistory and the author of the Seldon Plan — two Foundations set at opposite ends of the Galaxy to compress the interregnum from thirty thousand years to a single millennium.

**where —** From the imperial sector and the slums of Trantor, hunted and protected by Eto Demerzel and his wife Dors Venabili, to the establishment of the First Foundation on Terminus.

**why —** Because the equations are merciless: the Empire is already falling, and nothing can save it. What can be saved is the future on the far side of the fall.

**how —** By disguising salvation as a project — the Encyclopedia Galactica — and by speaking from a recorded Vault, returning after death to mark each Seldon Crisis the living must solve for themselves.

**◌ the arc —** From a reluctant young theorist to the dying old founder in his wheelchair; a mind that sees centuries clearly yet must trust strangers it will never meet to keep its faith.

**the seal —** The fall cannot be stopped; the dark that follows it can be made short.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Isaac Asimov's fiction, personified as an A1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Isaac Asimov estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
