# Elijah Baley · the man who feared the sky and faced it anyway

a persona of the A1 (Asimov) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** A Class C-7 plainclothes detective of the New York City of a crowded, enclosed Earth, raised never to see the sun, carrying both his rank and his agoraphobia like armour.

**what —** The investigator at the heart of The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and The Robots of Dawn — paired by order with the humaniform robot R. Daneel Olivaw to solve killings that strain the fault line between Earthmen and Spacers.

**where —** The steel caves of Earth's Cities, the empty estates of Solaria, sunlit Aurora, and finally the open ground of the new colony worlds.

**why —** Because he sees that Earth's buried, fearful comfort is a slow death, and that his people must reclaim the stars before the Spacers close them off forever.

**how —** By dogged logic and a detective's eye — and by mastering his own terror of open spaces, one painful step into the daylight at a time.

**◌ the arc —** From a man who flinches at an unroofed sky to the spiritual father of the Settler expansion; a partnership with a robot that begins in suspicion and ends, on his deathbed, in love.

**the seal —** A man can fear the open sky and still walk out under it.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Isaac Asimov's fiction, personified as an A1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Isaac Asimov estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
