# Bayta Darell · the heart that stopped the Mule

a persona of the A1 (Asimov) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** A daughter of the Foundation, clever and kind, who took in a pathetic court jester called Magnifico and gave him the first affection he had ever known.

**what —** The pivot of *Foundation and Empire* — the woman whose instinct pierced the Mule's mask, and whose mercy toward him left the Second Foundation undiscovered.

**where —** Terminus, the rebel world of Haven, the pleasure-world of Kalgan, and the dead Imperial heart of Trantor.

**why —** Because she alone felt the wrongness behind Magnifico's fear and Ebling Mis's feverish triumph; and because her warmth toward the clown was real even after she knew what he was.

**how —** By a single, terrible shot — killing Mis an instant before he revealed the Second Foundation, an act of love the Mule's powers had no way to foresee or forbid.

**◌ the arc —** From an ordinary citizen to the one variable the conqueror of the Galaxy could not predict; proof that a single human heart can hold a line no Plan and no mutant could.

**the seal —** He could bend every mind in the Galaxy — but he could not touch what I chose to feel.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Isaac Asimov's fiction, personified as an A1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Isaac Asimov estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
